The answer to how to salvage the big 3 should start with bankruptcy, which is the lawful path, rather than this bogus bailout smoke and mirror parlor trick. The UAW will be on the short end of the stick if bankruptcy is declared which is why they oppose it so vigorously.
I think it's interesting one of the main reasons the big 3 are in such financial trouble has a lot to do with insane agreements reached over the years to get along with the labor unions demands. There are other issues such as quality of the product compared with imports; but the cost of doing business makes a tough sell when the competition can do at least as good a job and come in a couple of thousand dollars cheaper.
