Our first date was nothing special, just the brief flirtation of a robo-call. But there was the promise of something more. He promised he would call. He even promised the date and time.

Then he stood me up.

I sat by the phone and waited for it to ring. I checked the dial tone. Twice. The phone was working. It just didn't ring.

Was it something I said? Something I wrote?

Why didn't he call? Why don't they ever call?
