Intentional Walk
O.K. here's my take on today's nomination of Harriet Miers. I don't know enough about the woman to have an opinion on how she would be as a justice on the Supreme Court. Given early support of the nomination from Minority Leader Harry Reed, there probably isn't much doubt that she will be approved.
The problem I have isn't what we don't know, it's the fact that we don't know. President Bush had the opportunity to send a clear and decisive message about his vision for the judiciary and the Supreme Court. Instead he pitched out. It may be the right tactical move in the end, but it is not inspiring.

Yeah, but, the right tactical move for what? To get his nominee confirmed? What good is getting an unknown quantity confirmed? I hope Bush had some long Q&A sessions with her before making the choice -- and that she was honest with him. I presume that his trusted advisors gave him a thumbs up. Cheney supports her, so maybe all the hooplah is just a product of the rest of us not knowing about her what they know about her. Here's hoping, anyway.
