Politicians Don't Listen

I just got off the phone from a very annoying political fundraising pitch. It was annoying because even though I agreed with everything the candidate's representative was saying - the man would not shut up and listen to what I had to say.

Here's a little tip for the fundraisers of Rob Simmons. I fully agree that if nothing else changes in the next election getting Chris "Friend of Angelo" Dodd out of the Senate is something that has to happen. That is the reason for my earlier contribution to his campaign. However, when you open you pitch with a lament about joblessness and the person on the other end of the line tells you that having just lost their job they are not in a position to make a contribution at this time, the proper response is not to ask for slightly less money.

When that person then explains that they will not be making any further contributions until they have an income - the proper response is not to ask for slightly less money.

That person is telling you that they are not going to give you any money at this time. Persisting in trying to extract money from that person is eventually going to piss them off. You don't want to piss off supporters and potential future contributors.

Offer a statement of some kind of empathy - even fake scripted empathy - wish them well and say the candidate will work to change policies that are crippling the economy. Ask for the vote.

Stop asking for money.

You would have to go a long way piss me off enough for me to hope Dodd wins the election. Today you took a small step in that direction.

1 Hopefully Peter Schiff decides to run- that way you'll have another option. I am not to familiar with Simmons' positions, but I doubt I would think he is better than Schiff.
