Quotes of the Entirely Random Time Period
Via Instapundit, a story from the Hartford Current on a Congressman's meet and greet in a supermarket parking lot.
As an aside, I wonder if says more about the times we live in that I find a local Connecticut story on blog written in Tennessee or does it say more about my tendency to focus my attention nationally at the expense of what's going on around me?
The quotes come from Representative Chris Murphy D-CT. There are two ways to interpret his statements. One is to say "here is a decent Democrat who though wrong on healthcare and probably everything else, at least gets the basic idea of his job and the First Amendment." The other is to say, here's a Democrat politician who in addition to worrying about the backlash against his party's response to healthcare opposition has to deal with the problem of being tied to Chris "Frieind of Angelo" Dodd. It is in his political best interest to come off as reasonable and non-partisan as possible. I don't know enough about the man to decide so I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and credit him for at least getting the whole "representative" part of his job right.
"Any time I'm talking to my constituents in an unfiltered way I consider it productive," he said in a phone interview afterward.
Murphy acknowledged that a few angry voices dominated the gathering, at least initially. But he said that didn't bother him. "Was that out of a ; text-decoration: none; ">Norman Rockwell town meeting painting? No. But there are big issues being discussed in Washington ... and people have a right to be concerned, even angry about it."
Good for you Congressman. I hope you mean it.
