Sean Hannity - Free Market Killer
I had talk radio on driving home, listening to Sean Hannity. I have to say with defenders like Hannity, it's no wonder the free market is in serious trouble.
He had a caller who was debating him on socialized health care. Hannity brought up the rationing and long waits issues. The pragmatic, unphilosophical argument against socialized health care. I think a more effective and important argument is the basic idea of freedom. The idea of being able to make your own medical decisions. The freedom to live your life. If you're argument is that socialized medicine is less effective then you've accepted the premise that it is right and you're debating the details.
He countered the callers socialized medicine ideas with Medical Savings Accounts. The caller agreed they were a great idea but challenged Hannity on how he would get enough people to participate.
Hannity's answer "I'd make it mandatory."
There are a couple of problems with that.
First there's the concept of freedom that I touched on above.
Second, once government mandates that we all have Medical Savings Accounts you can bet your last Medical Dollar that they will be dictating what you can spend it on. So in essence his alternative to forcing us all into a system of government run health care is to force us all into a system of government run health care.
In closing out the call and segueing into a commercial Hannity proudly proclaimed, Free solutions always work and are always the answer.
No. I'm not kidding. I can't recall the exact quote because I spent the next two minutes loudly ranting at the radio, but that's what he said.
Hannity broadcasts this nonsense to millions. If this is what his audience accepts as Free Markets, were in a lot of trouble.
