The Nanny-State Strikes Again

As of October 1st Connecticut joins the ranks of those states who have banned the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. Apparently you get the first offense waved if you show up in court with a receipt for the purchase of a hands-free device. The second offense will cost you $100.

Thank goodness the state is there to protect us from ourselves. Actually, they are probably doing me a favor. If I'm not holding onto the phone I won't have to put my coffee down to change songs on my iPod. This should allow me to safely add another 5 to 10 mph to my average speed too.

1 Stephen,
On "public" roads, do you think the state has a right to control access and usage? If you feel that cell phone use should be protected, do you also feel that drunk driving should be legal?

To me, I consider this to be a legitimate law, although I don't know if cell phones are dangerous enough to be worth regulating (although some studies say driving with a cell phone is worse than drunk driving, a study somewhere will show whatever you want it to). On a road, you're driving a 3000-lb death missile. Just like we don't allow people to wantonly fire guns up in the air to celebrate like in the middle east, as it creates a serious danger for whoever those bullets might fall on, we have rules in place for driving on public roads. Behavior that creates a high level of danger for those around you may need to be restricted (at least on public roads, if you want to drive drunk, talking on your cell phone, at 90 mph on private roads, that's your prerogative).

2 Apparently that came off a little more serious than intended. I'm mostly just annoyed that I had to spend the money on a hands-free thing. They are forcing me to spend money I don't want to spend for an item I don't want or need. So I took the only protest action left open to me and ordered it online so the state didn't get its 6% sales tax!

3 No worries... I just watch too many people who suddenly cease to realize they're behind the wheel of a motor vehicle once that phone rings. And as a former motorcyclist, that scares me quite a bit...
